I Know the Way to the Hofbrauhaus is a curious piece, really. Shot on Super-8mm, it has that gritty, raw feel typical of the era. It's a silent film, but don’t let that fool you; the intertitles give it a unique rhythm that pairs well with the absurdity of the narrative. The protagonist, Hick, embodies that wandering spirit, lost in his own desires, and it’s both humorous and tragic. The pacing feels unhurried, almost dreamlike, as we follow his misadventures. The lack of a script lends an improvisational quality to the performances, allowing for spontaneous moments that feel genuine. It’s definitely different—Achternbusch definitely leaves his mark here, for better or worse.
Unique silent film style with intertitles.Improvisational performances add a layer of spontaneity.Explores themes of desire and existential wandering.
