Ice Cold in Alex is one of those films that really captures the grit of war and the dire conditions of a North African desert during WWII. J. Lee Thompson crafts a palpable tension as we follow a group of soldiers and nurses on their trek. The atmosphere is thick with exhaustion and hope, and there's this great interplay between the characters, especially with the lead's obsession with that ice-cold beer waiting for him in Alexandria. The pacing is deliberate, allowing the harsh realities of their journey to sink in. Practical effects create a raw authenticity which, combined with solid performances, makes the viewer feel the heat and struggle. Plus, the ending is quite a memorable payoff, one that highlights the camaraderie forged in adversity.
