I’m Free (2019) dives into the raw and often uncomfortable world of adolescence through the lens of Artem, a real piece of work. He’s hard to like at first, but his time volunteering at a center for disabled kids reshapes him in unexpected ways. The film does a great job of exploring friendship and vulnerability, especially in the bond he forms with Kostya, a boy in a wheelchair. Their interactions are remarkably touching, punctuated by quiet moments that linger longer than necessary, creating an atmosphere that’s both heavy and uplifting. The pacing is deliberate, allowing us to feel the weight of Artem’s struggles and growth. The performances feel genuine—there’s a realness in the way they navigate their worlds that sticks with you long after the credits roll.
