Imperio, directed by Merlin Slamanig, blends adventure and fantasy in a rather unique way. The story kicks off with three young wizards caught up in a Quidditch match, which sets a lively tone before things take a darker turn. Zara, the witch, with her menacing presence, really shifts the atmosphere, creating a palpable sense of danger. Jule’s abduction and Timo’s determination to rescue her brings in this interesting dynamic between the magical and the mundane. The pacing can feel a bit uneven at times, but it adds to the sense of urgency. The practical effects used for the spells and the flying scenes are quite charming, reminiscent of classic fantasy films, and the performances, especially by the kids, have this genuine, earnest vibe that you don’t always see in today’s cinema.
