Inferno (1999) is an interesting entry in John G. Avildsen's filmography. The story's a classic revenge tale but with a kind of somber, introspective twist. Eddie Lomax, played by the somewhat understated Jean-Claude Van Damme, is a character at a crossroads—haunted by his friend’s death. The small desert town setting creates this desolate, almost oppressive atmosphere that you don’t see in many action flicks. The pacing is slower than you might expect, which allows for some character depth before all the mayhem breaks loose. Sure, there's the usual action, but it feels almost secondary to Lomax's emotional journey. And those practical effects showcase a gritty realism that CGI just can't replicate. A unique watch for collectors who appreciate layered storytelling in their genre films.
