So, Insomnia (2017) is quite the trip, really. It’s an animation that plays with the aesthetics of old-school 16mm film, and it opens on this stark black leader that just pulls you into a whole different headspace. The pacing is unhurried, even meditative, which really lets the viewer soak in the details and the atmosphere. You can feel the weight of sleep deprivation almost tangibly in the visuals. The practical effects are minimal but add this raw edge that feels almost tactile. Themes of isolation and reflection run deep, and there's a certain haunting quality to the whole piece. It’s more about mood than plot, which I find refreshing, honestly. Definitely strays from conventional storytelling.
