Into Great Silence is a fascinating dive into monastic life, capturing the Carthusian monks' existence in the Grande Chartreuse. Philip Gröning's approach is so methodical; the pacing unfolds at a deliberate crawl, mirroring the monks' own rhythms. There’s virtually no narration, just the ambient sounds of nature and the monastery. It’s about silence, yes, but also about the weight of time—how actions so simple can carry enormity when done with intention. The cinematography is striking; the Alps provide a striking backdrop. You really feel the isolation and tranquillity. It's almost like being invited to share a moment of stillness with them. A unique film experience that does away with traditional documentary structure.
Filmed over a 6-month period in 2002-2005No artificial lighting used; all natural ambient lightFirst film authorized by the Carthusian order since the 1984 proposalDuration: 162 minutes, intentionally slow pacing
