Inviting the Demons (2013) is one of those low-budget horror flicks that leans heavily into the party-gone-wrong trope. The atmosphere is thick with a sense of impending doom as a group of university students, full of bravado and booze, unwittingly unleash malevolent forces with a Ouija board. The pacing feels a bit uneven at times, lulling you into a false sense of security before ramping up the tension in a chaotic flurry. What's interesting is the use of practical effects, which lend a gritty realism to the supernatural elements. The performances are just okay, but they manage to capture that youthful recklessness. It’s not groundbreaking, but it has its moments, and there's a certain charm in its raw execution.
