Jack the Reaper is an interesting blend of horror and youthful folly. Directed by Kimberly Seilhamer, it weaves a tale of a group of teens who stumble into a bizarre desert carnival, only to confront a sinister railroad reaper. The atmosphere is thick with tension, and you can feel the weight of the setting pressing down on the characters. The pacing does a decent job of building suspense, with some genuinely creepy moments that rely on practical effects rather than CGI, which is always a plus in my book. Performances are pretty solid for the budget, and there's a certain charm in how it embraces its low-fi roots. It’s distinct in its approach to the slasher genre, offering a fresh, if not entirely polished, take on horror tropes.
