Japanese Mom is quite the oddity in the realm of drama and romance. Directed by Kim Moo-won, this 2017 film dives into some pretty uncomfortable themes, mixing the absurd and the heartfelt. The pacing feels off at times, which actually amplifies its quirks. Performances are a mixed bag; Ki-ho comes off as pretty selfish, while Yuki’s character feels more layered. The whole mother-son dynamic, mixed with infidelity, creates a strangely compelling atmosphere. It’s not your typical love story—more like a critique of relationships wrapped in a bizarre package. It’s definitely unique, for better or worse, and might leave you scratching your head by the end.
