So, 'John Loves Mary' is this charming little comedy from 1949, directed by David Butler. The premise is kind of absurd but funny in a way that feels very much of its time. You’ve got John, a soldier returning home after WWII, and he’s got all these romantic expectations but, surprise, he’s married. The dynamics with Mary are just awkward enough to keep you chuckling. The pacing is spot on, with a nice blend of dialogue and situational humor that keeps it light. It’s got that post-war sentimentality, you know? The performances feel genuine, especially from the leads. There's also this subtle layer of commentary on love and commitment that you don’t see too often in comedies. A bit of a gem if you ask me.
