Junun alfirakh is quite a curious piece from 1998, really. The film takes a look at this odd disease hitting a village, rendering the men impotent, and it sets up a rather tense atmosphere. The pacing feels deliberate, almost meditative at times, which adds to the unsettling nature of the story. The doctor character is intriguing, navigating the bureaucracy of health authorities while dealing with villagers' despair. I mean, who would've thought a shipment of chickens could lead to such chaos? It’s a blend of social commentary and dark humor, the practical effects are understated but effective. It’s definitely a film that lingers in your mind long after viewing, for better or worse.
