K-9 is one of those buddy cop flicks that brings a lighthearted twist to the action-comedy genre. Jim Belushi as Michael Dooley is a bit over the top, but that’s part of the charm. The real standout here, though, is Jerry Lee, the dog. He's got a personality that steals scenes and brings that unpredictability to the mix. The pacing is pretty steady, keeping things light but not too shallow. Some of the practical effects, especially with the dog stunts, give it a nice retro feel. Sure, it’s not reinventing the wheel, but it’s a good blend of laughs and action. Just the right amount of 80s vibe, too.
