Kanikôsen is quite the harrowing watch, really. Set on a fishing boat, it dives deep into the bleak lives of workers grappling with brutal conditions and exploitation. Shinjo, our reluctant protagonist, embodies the struggle against a harsh system—his journey is painfully human. The atmosphere is thick with despair, and the pacing feels relentless, mirroring the workers' plight. You really get a sense of the grueling existence they endure, almost suffocating at times. The performances carry a rawness that’s hard to shake off, enhancing the film’s gritty realism. It’s distinctive in how it captures both the physical toll and the mental anguish without any sugarcoating. A heavy watch, but it leaves an impression.
