King Kong (1976) is an interesting take on the classic tale. Directed by John Guillermin, this version leans into the adventure and fantasy elements, mixing them with a bit of 70s flair. The pacing feels a bit uneven at times, but it really captures the tension of the expedition versus the giant ape. The practical effects, especially for the time, are quite impressive, giving Kong a physicality that some modern CGI can’t quite replicate. The performances, particularly Jessica Lange’s, add a depth to the story that sometimes gets overshadowed by the creature feature aspect. There’s something about the atmosphere, a mix of wonder and impending doom, that makes this version stand out in its own right.
