Kiss of the Spider Woman is quite a unique film, blending personal stories with larger political themes. The performances by William Hurt and Raul Julia are exceptional, with Hurt’s nuanced portrayal of Molina really standing out. The way they use old movie references to construct fantasies brings a certain melancholy to those prison walls. The film has this slow, deliberate pace that builds tension in such an engaging way; you feel every moment in that cell. Visually, it’s pretty striking too, especially the dream sequences. You can tell Babenco is interested in the emotional connection between these two men, and it’s layered with complexity. Not your typical prison film, that’s for sure.
Directed by Héctor Babenco, released in 1985.Won an Academy Award for Best Actor (William Hurt).Based on Manuel Puig's novel, unique narrative style.Features minimalist sets that enhance the character focus.
