So, La Traviata from the Met in 1981 is quite the gem. James Levine’s direction adds layers to the music, which is already rich with emotional depth. The pacing feels just right, allowing the audience to really soak in the poignant moments. Ileana Cotrubas as Violetta—her performance is something else, really. You can feel her pain and joy in every note. And don’t get me started on Plácido Domingo; he brings a passion to Alfredo that’s hard to shake off. The atmosphere is lush, with the costumes and set design enhancing the operatic experience without overshadowing the music. It’s a nice blend of drama and romance, wrapped in Verdi’s haunting melodies.
