Ladyhawke is this curious blend of adventure and fantasy with a dash of romance. Richard Donner crafts a medieval world where the curse of love really takes center stage. The practical effects, especially the transformation scenes, have a certain charm, even if they feel a bit dated. Rutger Hauer as Navarre brings a brooding presence, while Michelle Pfeiffer's ethereal performance as Isabeau is something else. And then there's Matthew Broderick—his comedic timing provides a nice counterbalance to the heavier themes of longing and separation. The pacing has its moments of languor, typical of ’80s fantasy, but it all builds up to a pretty satisfying climax, even if it feels a bit straightforward. The score by Alan Parsons adds a unique flavor too, blending rock and orchestral that’s quite memorable.
