Lure of the Wasteland is one of those curious entries from the late '30s that tries to inject some color into the Western genre. Grant Withers as Smitty brings a likable, if somewhat understated performance, as he hunts for those stolen bonds amidst the dusty landscapes. The Telco-color process gives it a unique visual quality, setting it apart from other Monogram offerings of the time. There's a certain charm in its pacing—slow yet deliberate, letting the tension build in the vast wastelands. While the plot isn't groundbreaking, it captures that classic Western feel with a sense of adventure and danger lurking around every corner.
This film is relatively scarce, often overshadowed by more prominent Westerns of its time. Its unique Telco-color process adds a layer of interest for collectors, as it offers a different aesthetic from the typical black and white Westerns. While not widely available on modern formats, it does show up occasionally in niche collections or at film festivals, attracting collectors who appreciate the blend of color and the Western genre's evolution.
