Mali Twist offers a vivid glimpse into the cultural landscape of Bamako in the 1960s. The dance scenes are electric, capturing that vibrant spirit of youth as they twist to rock and roll, which feels so freshly imported. Samba's character is layered, a young socialist caught in the throes of love and political aspiration. Lara, spirited and defiant, adds a rich dynamic to their journey as they flee the constraints of her forced marriage. The pacing is contemplative at times, reflecting the weight of their choices. There's something raw and authentic about the performances; you can feel the tension between hope and reality. The film's ability to blend personal struggles with broader political themes is what stands out for me.
