Mallet is an interesting take on the horror genre, really plays with childhood fears. The atmosphere is thick with tension, you can feel it seeping through the screen. Tyler, the little boy, is a standout; his performance is raw and believable. The masked killer feels like a nightmare made flesh, and the practical effects...they really bring a sense of realism that digital effects often fail to capture. The pacing has a nice ebb and flow—there’s a buildup that makes the moments of horror hit harder. It dives into themes of fear and survival, and you can kind of sense the struggle of a child trying to make sense of what's happening around him. Definitely stands out in this current horror landscape.
