Manifest Destiny is this curious little gem from 2000 that dances between comedy and a bit of introspection. The premise is both absurd and oddly relatable: a dude dealing with alcoholism, but instead of typical drama, he’s got a 2-foot blue puppet as his inner demon. It’s kind of hard to explain the charm of that without sounding ridiculous, but it works. The practical effects of the puppet are endearing, giving the film a quirky, low-budget vibe that enhances its quirky atmosphere. The pacing feels a bit off at times, not quite sure if it wants to be a straight comedy or a more serious take on addiction. Still, the performances, particularly that of the lead, are genuine enough to carry the film’s unique tone.
