Mansion of the Living Dead is one of those curious entries in Jesús Franco's filmography that mixes sleazy horror with an odd sense of atmosphere. Shot at what looks like a deserted Spanish resort, the hotel feels more tomb than getaway. The pacing is languid, almost dreamlike, which makes the sudden violence all the more jarring. The performances of the strippers are a mixed bag, but they lend a rawness to the unfolding dread. The practical effects aren’t groundbreaking, but they get the job done in a way that feels fittingly grimy for the film’s tone. There's a sense of unease throughout, and the eerie tolling bell acts as a haunting motif. It’s all very Franco – both fascinating and frustrating in equal measure.
Not for everyone, but intriguing if you're into obscure horror. The cinematography captures the eerie isolation well.Has a certain charm despite its rough edges.
