Mars: The Movie is one of those fascinating artifacts from the late '80s that showcases the early days of 3D animation. Developed at JPL, it presents a detailed exploration of the Martian terrain, which is both mesmerizing and a bit nostalgic if you’re into the evolution of visual effects. The pacing is measured, allowing viewers to really absorb the stunning visuals, even though they might seem primitive by today’s standards. It’s interesting to note that this film is a follow-up to LA the Movie, and you can see the progression in their techniques. However, if you’re catching it on the Computer Animation Festival Volume 1.0 VHS or the Computer Animation Adventure DVD, just be aware that the opening monologue is missing, which changes the tone a bit.
Watch for early 3D terrain animation techniques. The opening monologue is cut in some versions.Interesting follow-up to LA the Movie.
