Mask of Death feels like a gritty 90s action thriller wrapped in a revenge narrative. You’ve got this layering of identity as McKenna, played with a certain intensity, is forced to undergo facial surgery to become someone he loathes. The pacing is pretty relentless, especially in the first act, with the tension cranked up as McKenna navigates the underworld. The practical effects are a bit raw but they add to that visceral experience, especially during the action sequences. The atmosphere is heavy, almost suffocating at times, which works well with the themes of loss and redemption. Lyle Mason’s character is an interesting foil, and the performances, while not always stellar, pull you into the dark world they inhabit.
Strong focus on identity and revenge.Notable practical effects during action scenes.Pacing shifts keep the tension high.
