Master Cats is one of those quirky comedies that really captures the essence of the early '70s French film scene. Directed by Claude Fournier, it tells the story of Rosaire and Alex, two down-on-their-luck guys who’ll try just about anything to make some cash and impress the ladies. The pacing has this nice, laid-back rhythm that feels very natural, matching the characters' bumbling attempts at success. The humor, while sometimes slapstick, also has this underlying social commentary about aspiration and desperation in the face of financial woes. Performances are lively, and you can really sense the camaraderie between the leads. There's something about the practical effects and the candid, almost documentary-like feel that enhances its charm.
