Men of Honor is one of those films that really takes you into the grit and grind of the military world. George Tillman Jr. does a solid job capturing the era, and the performances, especially by Cuba Gooding Jr. as Carl Brashear, really pull you in. The whole dynamic between Brashear and his instructor, played by Robert De Niro, is fascinating; it’s this push-and-pull relationship that evolves throughout the film. You can feel the tension in those diving scenes, which are shot with a certain rawness that adds to the drama. The pacing has its ups and downs, but it builds nicely to a climax that feels earned. There’s a lot about perseverance and breaking barriers, and it’s all grounded in a true story, which gives it that added weight. It's a unique blend of personal struggle and institutional challenges.
