ML (2018) is one of those thrillers that really digs into the mindset of a millennial. You’ve got Carlo, this jock who’s living in a bit of a bubble, grappling with the harsh realities of history. It’s a slow burn, but it really captures that uneasy tension between the past and present. The atmosphere is thick with claustrophobia, especially in the classroom scenes where Carlo faces off against his History professor. The film doesn’t shy away from its themes of complacency and revisionist history, which is pretty timely. Performances are solid, especially the professor who brings this weighty gravitas. Practical effects are minimal but effective, letting the dialogue and moral dilemmas take center stage. It leaves you pondering long after the credits roll.
