Mortal Kombat (2021) brings a fresh take on the franchise, stepping away from the campiness of the 90s films. The film has a gritty tone with a darker atmosphere that complements its action-heavy sequences. Cole Young, the lead, isn’t your typical hero; he’s a flawed MMA fighter trying to find his place and purpose. The choreography is impressive, and the practical effects stand out, especially during the fatality scenes. Sub-Zero is portrayed with a chilling presence that elevates the stakes. The pacing feels a bit uneven at times, but it captures the essence of the video game’s lore while still leaving room for character development. It’s a mixed bag, but I appreciate the effort to ground it in reality while embracing the fantastical elements.
Directed by Simon McQuoid, his feature debut.Features a diverse cast with strong martial arts backgrounds.Released in both digital and physical formats.Notable for its blend of CGI and practical effects.
