Mrs Lowry & Son offers this really intimate look into the life of L.S. Lowry. The film captures that oppressive atmosphere of his home, where he’s constantly under the thumb of his mother, Elizabeth. You can feel that tension in every scene. The pacing is slow, which I think works well to highlight their fraught relationship. You see how his art is both an escape and a reflection of his struggles. The performances, especially from the mother figure, are raw and impactful. It’s not flashy, but it tells a story of longing, creativity, and constraint. The practical effects are understated, lending a certain realism that pulls you into their world.
