My Own Private Idaho has this raw, almost dream-like quality. Van Sant’s direction really digs into the emotional landscape of wandering souls. The pacing can be slow but it fits the characters—Mike’s narcolepsy adds a surreal touch, making you feel what he feels. River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves have a chemistry that’s both tender and complicated; they’re not just hustlers, they’re searching for connection. The mix of urban settings and wide-open Idaho landscapes adds to the feeling of isolation. Plus, the practical effects are understated but striking, like the intimate moments captured in the frame. It’s a film you can’t help but get lost in, like the characters themselves.
