Needle Nightmares is something else. It's not your typical documentary, that's for sure. The way it dives into the psychological impact of AIDS is raw and unflinching. The voiceover, with its directness and that little bite of sarcasm, feels like a conversation with someone who's seen it all but doesn't sugarcoat anything. The pacing is almost hypnotic, drawing you into Phil Zwickler's world without ever showing him on screen. It's a bold choice, really, leaving so much to the imagination, yet it paints a vivid picture of his life and struggles. The atmosphere is heavy, but there's also a strange kind of honesty that makes it distinctive. It challenges you, makes you think, and lingers long after it's over.
