Nekromantik is a tough watch, and not just because of its subject matter. Jörg Buttgereit gives us a grim and bleak exploration of love and obsession, wrapped in a gritty, almost voyeuristic atmosphere. The pacing is slow, deliberately so, which lets the disturbing themes simmer. The practical effects are raw but striking, capturing a grotesque reality that some might find off-putting, but it's all part of the film's unique charm. Performances are unpolished yet haunting—especially from the lead, who embodies despair in a way that lingers. It’s one of those films that challenges you, and while it might not be for everyone, its cult status speaks to its distinctiveness in the horror genre.
