So, 'New Year's Duty' is an interesting piece from 2014. The film's about Dolgachev, freshly out after six years, trying to navigate life and make a clean break. But, of course, life has other plans. The atmosphere captures that desperate tension of New Year's Eve, a time when everyone’s supposed to be celebrating, yet he’s on the brink of committing one last crime. The pacing is a bit uneven, which can be frustrating but also makes for this raw, uneasy viewing experience. The performances are quite compelling; you can really feel the weight of his choices. It’s not flashy but it has this gritty realism that sticks with you. There’s something about its themes of redemption and the pull of past mistakes that really resonates.
