Not Counting the Savages, directed by Mike Newell, has this peculiar tone that's hard to pin down—sort of darkly whimsical, if that makes sense. The pacing is a bit unconventional, meandering in places, but it allows the audience to soak in the atmosphere. The performances are raw and authentic, which really pulls you into the characters' struggles. There's a clever use of practical effects, too, which gives it this gritty texture that feels tangible. It's distinctive in how it tackles themes of survival and moral ambiguity, often leaving you with more questions than answers. You can feel the ambition in every frame, even if it doesn’t always hit the mark.
This film has had a bit of a patchy distribution history, with formats varying from VHS to DVD but not much in the way of special editions or remasters. As for scarcity, it’s not the easiest title to find, which makes it a bit of a treasure among collectors. Interest seems to be growing, especially among those intrigued by Newell's early work, as it showcases a different side of his directorial style.
