So, Off Beat is this quirky little comedy from 1986 directed by Michael Dinner. The vibe is laid-back yet filled with these silly moments that keep you grinning. Joe Gower, played by the charmingly awkward Jeffrey Tambor, spends his days shelving books and then gets roped into this charity dance gig masquerading as a cop. The pacing has a nice rhythm, almost like it’s skating through scenes just like Joe does in the library. The chemistry between the cast is palpable, especially between Joe and the female officer, which adds this sweet layer. The practical effects are subtle, but there’s a certain charm to the way the film captures those goofy dance numbers. It’s one of those flicks that just doesn’t take itself too seriously.
