Once a Gangster is an interesting blend of action, comedy, and crime that takes a somewhat unconventional approach to the gangster genre. The film follows Roast Pork, a triad member whose life is a tug-of-war between the dark allure of organized crime and the more mundane yet satisfying existence of family life and running a restaurant chain. The atmosphere is a curious mix of humor and tension, and you can feel the pacing shift between moments of chaotic action and heartfelt domestic scenes. It’s not every day you see a film tackle the contrast between a gangster’s life and the appeal of family ties. The performances are pretty engaging, especially the lead, who balances the duality of his character quite well. It certainly has its quirks that make it stand out from the typical gangster fare.
Dives into the duality of crime and family life.Visual humor complements the action scenes.Offers a unique perspective on gangster life.
