Once Were Humans is a raw, intimate exploration of human connection and the weight of past choices. Youāve got Leo, an Italian clinging to remnants of his family in Slovenia, and VuÄko, a Bosnian who bears the scars of a childhood marked by conflict. The film really immerses you in their world, showcasing the emotional turmoil and the struggle for belonging. The pacing, a bit languid at times, invites you to sit with the characters as they navigate their fractured lives. The performances are quite striking, particularly the way the lead actors embody their struggles without overdoing it. There's a distinct atmosphere ā a mix of hope and despair ā that lingers long after the credits roll, making it a contemplative watch.
