Ondine is a beautifully atmospheric film that really captures the rugged charm of the Cork coastline. Neil Jordan weaves a tale that feels both intimate and mythical, focusing on Syracuse, a fisherman whose life takes a turn upon discovering Ondine, a mysterious woman who washes ashore. The pacing is thoughtful, allowing the viewer to soak in the hauntingly eerie quality of Ondine’s story, as well as the genuine bond that develops between her and Syracuse’s daughter, Annie. The performances, especially by the leads, have a raw, unrefined quality which adds to the film's authenticity. It touches on themes of love, belief, and the fantastical, all wrapped in a subtle realism that lingers long after viewing. Plus, the practical effects used to depict Ondine’s otherworldly aspects are quite charming, enhancing the dreamlike atmosphere.
