Only Saps Work is a solid slice of early talkie charm, showcasing Leon Errol’s rubber-legged antics as he navigates the world of petty crime. Directed by Cyril Gardner, this film is based on a play by Owen Davis Sr. and it captures that transitional period in cinema with its mix of comedy and crime. The pacing might feel uneven at times, but Errol’s performance as James Wilson—a kleptomaniac whose misadventures escalate from pickpocketing to bank robbery—brings a certain comedic warmth. Richard Arlen as his friend Lawrence Payne adds a nice dynamic. The practical effects are minimal, but there's something about the atmosphere that feels distinctly pre-Code, with its cheeky exploration of crime without the moralizing that would come later.
