Onmyoji (2001) really captures the weight of the Heian period. The atmosphere is steeped in a blend of historical drama and supernatural intrigue, and Yojiro Takita crafts a visually striking world. The pacing shifts nicely; it has moments of tension that build up to intense confrontations. I find the themes of loyalty and betrayal resonate strongly throughout, especially as internal strife within the onmyōji clan unfolds. The practical effects used to depict the supernatural elements are actually quite impressive, giving it a tangible feel. The performances, particularly by the lead, really bring out the nuances of their characters, making the political intrigue all the more engaging. It’s certainly distinctive for its blend of genres and the historical context it explores.
