So, 'Orphée aux enfers' from '97 is quite the lively take on Offenbach's work, huh? Laurent Pelly really brings his unique flair to the staging. The pacing is brisk, almost playful, but it doesn’t lose that operatic grandeur. Minkowski’s direction is sharp, and the Orchestra and Chorus of the Opera National de Lyon deliver an impressive performance. Natalie Dessay shines as Eurydice, her voice just floats over the orchestration. The comedy here is clever and light, poking fun at the genre while still honoring it. There’s this colorful atmosphere that draws you in – it feels vibrant and whimsical. Definitely distinct, not your run-of-the-mill opera production.
