Overdrive (1997) dives deep into the adrenaline-fueled world of illegal street racing. Gary Stricker, played with reckless abandon, finds a spark in a woman who could change his life. But, of course, the stakes are high; she might just be the reason he meets his end. The film captures that raw, gritty atmosphere of the underground racing scene, and it’s interesting how it contrasts the thrill of speed with the fragility of human connections. The pacing revs up nicely, keeping you engaged, even if it stumbles in character depth. There’s a certain charm in its practical effects too, with some impressive car stunts that are refreshing in an age of CGI. A curious blend of action and human drama, it has its own unique vibe.
