So, 'Pack Up Your Troubles' is a really interesting blend of comedy and war themes, typical of the early ‘30s. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, as usual, showcase their impeccable timing and charming idiocy, which is particularly engaging against the backdrop of WWI. The film starts off with them getting drafted, which sets a rather somber tone, but it’s peppered with their classic slapstick humor. The pacing shifts nicely between moments of lightheartedness and the more serious undertones of loss as they deal with the death of their friend Eddie. There’s something raw about how they navigate this world, and the practical effects, especially in the battle scenes, feel quite genuine for the era. It's distinct for its mix of humor with a war context, which isn't something you see every day.
