Panic in the Skies is one of those TV thrillers that manages to create a tense atmosphere despite its constraints. The premise is pretty simple yet effective: lightning strikes a Boeing 747, taking out the flight crew, which thrusts the senior flight attendant, Laurie, into a crisis situation. The pacing here is a mix of urgency and claustrophobia, really pulls you into the cockpit’s chaos. And while the practical effects might not compete with big-budget blockbusters, they serve the story well enough. The performances are solid, especially the dynamic between Laurie and Brett Young, who is just an ordinary passenger caught in the storm. It’s that combination of survival instincts and the everyday hero that makes it stand out in the landscape of made-for-TV movies from the era.
Thunderstorm-induced crises in aviation stories are intriguing.Interesting character development in a high-pressure scenario.Good example of 90s TV movie production values.
