So, 'Paper Lantern' is this gritty, new wave Yakuza film featuring Takanori Jinnai as a young Yakuza hit by stomach cancer. It’s pretty raw, you know? The atmosphere is heavy with that existential dread, and you can feel the weight of his character's impending doom throughout the film. The pacing is deliberate, almost meditative at times, which lets the viewer really sit with the themes of mortality and loyalty. The practical effects used in some scenes are quite striking, feeling very grounded. It's interesting how the film pulls from Shoji Kaneko's unfinished manuscript, giving it this haunting, almost unfinished quality. Jinnai's performance is layered; you can sense the pain and the fight within him. It’s not your typical Yakuza flick, that’s for sure.
Notable for its unique take on the Yakuza genre.Heavily influenced by Shoji Kaneko's posthumous work.Jinnai's performance adds depth to the story.
