Pete's Dragon (1977) has this unique blend of live-action and animation that really draws you in. The way they animate Elliott is so charming; he's not just a dragon but a friend who gets into all sorts of mischief. The film has this lighthearted vibe that captures childhood innocence, and you can feel the warmth of the Maine setting. The pacing might feel a bit slow in spots, but it allows for those character moments to sink in. The performances, especially from Sean Marshall as Pete and Helen Reddy as Nora, have a nice authenticity. Plus, there's something special about the way practical effects are used, giving Elliott a tangible feel amidst the wacky situations. It's delightful without being overly sappy.
