Poker, from 2001, plays out more as a layered study of its characters rather than your typical comedy. It's got this intriguing mix of tension and humor that flows in and out like a good game of cards. The anti-hero Borut, with his disregard for societal norms, really stands out as he navigates this world. Duro's quest to track down his boss's money adds a nice undercurrent of suspense, while Matjaz's attempts to be near his love give it a personal touch. The pacing is somewhat uneven, but that makes the moments of levity hit harder. Plus, the performances have this raw, unrefined edge that complements the film’s philosophy about life and poker, which is refreshingly different. It's not a straightforward laugh-fest, but rather a deeper dive into human desires and connections.
