Poppy is a solid example of 1930s comedy with a quirky charm. Sutherland's direction has a light touch, letting the absurdity of Eustace McGargle's antics shine through. W.C. Fields, as McGargle, delivers his trademark blend of humor and pathos, with that unique voice and physical comedy that he's known for. The pacing is relaxed but never drags, with the carnival atmosphere really bringing the setting to life. There's something refreshing about the father-daughter dynamic; it feels genuine amidst the con artist backdrop. Plus, the practical effects in some of the carnival scenes are a nice nod to the era. Not every joke lands perfectly, but that's part of its charm.
