So, Prisoner of Zenda from '88, it’s a curious blend of adventure and animation that somehow brings a fresh twist to the classic tale. The pacing isn't exactly brisk, and that's kind of nice, really. It lets you soak in the atmosphere of this fictional kingdom. There’s humor sprinkled throughout, which feels a bit whimsical, but not overly done. The practical effects have that charmingly dated quality, yet they add a unique texture. And oh, the performances! The stand-in, who ends up in this tangled web of deception and romance with Princess Flavia, really sells the identity crisis angle. There’s a sweet tension as he navigates royal duties while grappling with his feelings. It’s a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is refreshing.
